Now the Norm: Cosmetic Procedures

By Melinda Croning

Everyone wants to look well rested and more youthful. Plastic surgeons help patients regain their youthful appearance - without having to undergo surgery - by using injectables and skin treatments. Patients who want to improve their appearance without the risk of complications or recovery time needed with more invasive plastic surgery treatments find non-invasive cosmetic procedures appealing.

Cosmetic surgery of any kind used to be an embarrassment, but in today's world things have changed so dramatically that people readily admit that they have had cosmetic surgery. In the field of plastic surgery, non-surgical procedures are one of the fastest growing areas. Non-surgical procedures focus on the troublesome areas of the face and body that might make you look old and tired. These procedures are very effective in the short term, although the results are often temporary.

There are many reasons that patients may opt for non-invasive alternatives rather than surgery. The affordability of these treatments is a prime concern. While surgery may be out of your budget, injectables or surface treatments are relatively inexpensive. Second, recovery requires little to no downtime. It can be difficult to get time off of work, as those of us with jobs know all too well. Most of these procedures are done in very little time at the office and patients are able to immediately return to their normal routine. Finally, there is the reduced risk and the safety factor. Compared to surgery, this type of cosmetic procedure presents very few complications. The results eventually wear off if you are not happy with them.

Non-invasive procedures involve two main types: injectables and surface treatments. Injectables are usually employed to reduce wrinkles and fine lines by plumping up the face. Laser treatments and chemical peels are surface treatments that target wrinkle reduction. Botox is the most popular non-invasive treatment choice for patients. A purified, natural protein, it is injected into the brow area where facial lines and wrinkles exist.

Physicians use it to smooth the lines between your brows that develop over time - those deep, persistent lines. Just a few small injections cause the facial muscles that form those lines to relax, for up to four months. Dramatic and apparent results appear within days. Even better is the fact that patients can go back to normal activity almost immediately after receiving the injections.

The natural process of aging causes skin to lose volume; facial fillers are used to replace it by plumping the skin. Wrinkles are smoothed and the youthful contour of your face is restored by these injectables.

Laser treatments help reduce the signs of aging, and are another popular non-invasive cosmetic procedure. One procedure that smooths the facial skin and in some cases, can improve the firmness of skin, is called laser skin resurfacing.

To even out skin tone affected by age, sun damage, or acne, a chemical peel is used. Younger, smoother skin is created by this procedure which uses a chemical solution to remove the damaged outer layers of your skin. It can improve the look of freckles, scars, fine lines and wrinkles, as well as sun-damaged skin.

Cosmetic procedures are varied. Clearly, there are many ways to make you look younger and feel more beautiful. You no longer have to break the bank to get your own treatment - good news.
